Tis the Season for Holiday Brews!

Okay, so most of the holiday beers have been out since like September  but I generally like to wait until after Thanksgiving to write about any of them.  They are kind of like the Christmas decorations.  Please wait until after the turkey has been consumed before putting them up.  Unless of course you are that family that leaves the lights up year round then it’s cool.  Only in New Orleans could you really get away with that without being called the “redneck family”.

This year it looks like New Orleans is getting a really nice selection of holiday beers.  I’ve been scouting places to see what is on the shelves out there and without a doubt Stein’s  is the place to go and I have a feeling he is just getting started.  Here is his list:

  • Mikkeller 2011 Santa’s Little Helper
  • Mikkeller 2010 Barrel-aged Santa’s Little Helper
  • Mikkeller Red/White Christmas
  • Corsendonk Christmas Ale (and glass set)
  • Gouden Carolus Noël
  • Fantôme de Noël
  • De Ranke Père Noël
  • La Choulette De Noël
  • Struise Tsjeeses
  • Struise Tsjeeses Reserva
  • Mahr’s Christmas Bock
  • Haandbryggeriet Nissefar
  • Anchor Our Special Ale 2011 (and 2010)
  • Saint Arnold Christmas Ale
  • Nogne Ø Peculiar Yule
  • Ridgeway Santa’s Butt
  • Thiriez Biere de Noël
  • Full Sail Wassail
  • Oppigårds Winter Ale
  • Brooklyn Winter Ale
  • Harpoon Winter Warmer
  • Sierra Nevada Celebration
  • Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome
  • To Øl Snowball Saison
  • Mikkeller Ris A La M’ale
  • Nogne Ø Winter Ale
  • Nogne Ø Winter Ale (Islay edition)
  • Samichlaus

The list is not only amazing but long.  Stein’s selection clearly covers every day leading up to Christmas and then some.  I’m so tempted to drink a different holiday beer every day leading up to Christmas.  We’ll call it research.  Can I write that off on my taxes?

In addition to Stein’s Deli for holiday beers I would also recommend your local Rouses, Cork & Bottle in Mid City, Martin Wine Cellar and Breaux Mart on Magazine St.

If you are looking for a pint of your favorite holiday beer The Avenue Pub has a nice list of brews as well:

Christmas Beers on draft:

  • Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA
  • Anchor Christmas 2011
  • Anchor Christmas 2009
  • Anchor Christmas 2008
  • Saint Arnolds Sailing Santa
  • Struisse Pannepot Grand Reserva 2008
  • Struisse Tjeesus
  • Noel Des Geants
  • Hanndbrygeriet Nissefar
 Christmas beers bottles:
  • Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela
Avenue Pub will also be hosting some holiday beer tastings:
Wednesday December 7th: Anchor Christmas vertical tasting
Wednesday  December 14th : St Arnolds, Struisse, Hanndbrygerit Holiday beers
I’m not sure if any of the local breweries are doing any holiday beers or not.  I do know that Abita has released their Christmas Ale which they do every year and that may be the only option right now. You should be able to find that one everywhere(except I guess Steins and Avenue Pub).  If any of the breweries contact us and tell us otherwise we will update.

  1. We’ve also just added bombers of St. Arnold Sailing Santa to the list you’ve posted of holiday/winter beers at Stein’s. Thanks for the plug, Buddha!
